OCFA Fire Cadet Academy

The OCFA Fire Cadet Program gives aspiring firefighters aged 14-21 valuable insight into fire service. Through experiential learning, team building, and mentorship, cadets are empowered to pursue a career as a firefighter or professional staff member at one of the nation’s premier fire departments. Every July, approximately 60 cadets participate in a week-long academy, and countless OCFA Chief Officers are proud graduates of this renowned program.

Become a Fire Cadet

The Fire Cadet Program is open to both males and females, age 14-21, who have completed 8th grade.

Each Cadet is required to:

  • Maintain a 2.0 or above GPA
  • Have no arrests or convictions
  • Adhere to fire safe grooming standards
  • If over 18, complete a background check

The Fire Cadet Program involves many hands-on and team-oriented learning activities. Those who are physically fit, possess a positive attitude and a good work ethic will enjoy and excel in this program.

Prospective Fire Cadets will embark on a ten-week Fire Cadet Trainee Academy consisting of basic level skills. The first nine weeks will be done at Fire Cadet Posts covering a variety of essential entry level classes, culminating in a comprehensive final exam during week ten at OCFA Headquarters. Upon successful completion of the trainee academy, participants will become full members in the Fire Cadet Program and ride-along certified. Fire Cadet Trainee Academies are held two times per year.
